Breastfeeding & Exercise: It CAN Be Done!

Happy Friday to All! Penghulu segala hari dan hari yang penuh barakah dan rahmat. Hari ini saya nak share dengan anda semua beberapa fact tentang exercise bagi ibu-ibu yang breastfeeding. An active lifestyle gives you energy, keeps stress at bay, and promotes a healthy weight – this does not need to stop because you are breastfeeding. But we all know that when it comes to breastfeeding and exercise, there are plenty of myths floating around that prevent many women from hitting the gym while breastfeeding. Here are a few of those myths, debunked.

In case you need a little extra motivation, here are just some of the many benefits mothers reap from exercise:

- healthier hearts
- increasted energy
- stress reduction
- fat loss
- protection against depression

Myth: Exercise decreases milk supply.
Fact: Exercise in no way decreases your milk supply. In fact, mothers who exercise while breastfeeding have babies who gain just as much weight as babies whose mothers do not exercise.

Myth: Exercise makes milk “sour.”
Fact: During exercise, muscles make a substance called lactic acid, and women who exercise strenuously will have more lactic acid in their milk. But contrary to this popular myth, this substance is harmless – and it will not make the baby unwilling to breastfeed or take milk from a bottle. In fact, lactic acid disappears quickly from the milk, even after intense exercise.

Myth: Exercise while breastfeeding is just too painful.
Fact: While it is quite true that exercising can be uncomfortable if your breasts are full, feeding the baby or pumping prior to exercise will help minimize this discomfort. Also, never underestimate the benefits of a truly supportive bra. During exercise, it is recommended to wear a sports bra, as opposed to a nursing bra, to ensure proper support. Once you have completed your workout, then put back on the nursing bra.
