Cancer claims at least six million lives annually worldwide. Despite billions of dollars of research and over three decades in the war against cancer, tumor cells remain a formidably stubborn foe to overcome.
The link between calorie restriction and inhibition of tumors is intriguing. Laboratory mice are bred with a defective p53 tumor suppressor gene and are prone to develop spontaneous tumors.
Calorie restriction during youth has been demonstrated to delay the onset of tumors in young mice. Male mice were placed into three groups. Group 1 ate food at will. Group 2 was given a diet with 40 percent less calories. Group 3 fasted 1 day a week. Calorie restriction significantly delayed the onset of tumors in adult mice, with a 1-day a week fast resulting in a modest delay in tumor development. This study convincingly shows that calorie restriction is a proven method of cancer prevention and even when practiced during adulthood, even in genetically-prone animals, and that a 1-day a week fast also had health benefits.
Research report after research report extol the many cancer inhibiting properties of resveratrol. While pharmaceutical companies endeavor to test drugs that block cancer growth in specific ways, resveratrol remarkably appears to inhibit the formation of tumor cells at every stage of cancer.
First, resveratrol is involved in inhibiting the first step in cancer formation, the DNA mutations and abnormalities within the energy producing centers of living cells (the mitochondria) that initiate the signals for cell growth to go awry.
Second, resveratrol interrupts chemical signals between cells that promote cancer.
Third, resveratrol inhibits the very growth of tumor cells.
Fourth, resveratrol knocks cancer cells out of their immortal state and induces them to die off.
Fifth, resveratrol calms down inflammation which is involved in all tumor environments. Sixth, resveratrol inhibits the formation of new blood vessels that supply tumors with nutrients for growth.
Seventh, resveratrol helps to prevent blood clots which serve as spawning grounds for tumors to spread and metastasize to other organs in the body.
