Subject: Worry Baby Only get Foremilk

Dear Mary,

It has been a while not writing to you. How are you? Hope you're in a great health. Here I'd like to seek an advise from you, base on my friend concern, Sheil(This email also cc to her):

She is now breastfeed her baby, reaching 4 months old. Her concern is, her baby weight gain is very small and her baby only breastfeed for a short period. She worries, if her baby didn't get the sufficient nutrient from the breast milk(only drink foremilk). She did said to me that sometimes her baby poo poo is light green colour (which mean her baby only consume foremilk right?). She also mentioned that her breastmilk is thin...

The question here:

1.      What she need to do, to ensure her baby obtain both foremilk and hindmilk? She try to pump and bottle fed her baby but baby refused?
2.      Is there a need for her to take supplement such as multivitamins or any milk booster(Alfalfa/fenugreek) to thicken her breastmilk?

Appreciate your reply soon...

Thank you & regards,

Zuraifah Anuar

Berikut ialah jawapan dari Mary Bibs:

Dear Zuraifah,

It's nice to hear from you again for your friend.

Here is some info for Sheil:

I think that you would benefit by eating or taking some things that can increase the supply.  I am sending you a list of these.  Increasing the fat in your diet will not increase the fat in your breast milk or make it richer.  I agree with Zuraifah that if your daughter only breastfeeds briefly that she is probably not getting the fat that is there for her. Can you try squeezing the breast when your daughter eats to try to get more milk to her?

It is fine that your baby won't take the extra milk by bottle.  But, would she take it if you put it in an eyedropper, a medicine syringe, a spoon or from a small cup?  Or, she could be fed the extra milk at the breast with some tubing.  Please see www.drjacknewman.com for Dr. Newman's description of a Lactation Aid.  Also, if you look at breast compression, you will see a description of squeezing the breast, and there is a video clip there too.  I recommend pumping AFTER she breastfeeds to try to increase the supply.

Here are the herbs, foods and medicines:

Some mothers find it helpful to take the herbs Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle, two to three capsules three times per day, and Goat's Rue, 1-2 tsp. in 8 oz. (240 mls) of boiling water once or twice a day. Increasing breastfeeding and/or pumping sessions must happen along with taking these herbs, as removing milk from the breasts is very important to stepping up milk production. Fenugreek should probably not to be used by people with asthma, as it may worsen symptoms. Also, Fenugreek may alter insulin needs in diabetic individuals.   Please consult with an herbalist or your doctor before using any herbs.

Two prescription medicines are often used for increasing the supply.  Domperidone (Motilium) is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use by breastfeeding mothers, but this medication is not readily available in the United States.  The other prescription medicine is Reglan, (Metoclopramide.)  Unfortunately, this medicine can have some serious side effects.  Please keep in close contact with your doctor if you are taking Reglan.

Here are some foods and herbs that can help to increase the supply:

  1. High fiber foods and grains such as oats (not instant), barley, brown rice and beans.
  2. Calcium-rich foods such as sesame, almonds and dark green leafy vegetables.
  3. Fruits such as apricots, dates, figs and cooked green papaya.  Soups made from Torbangun or Mulunggay leaves.
  4. Herbs:  Some of the common cooking herbs include anise, blackseed, caraway, coriander; dill, fennel and fenugreek.
  5. Nonfood herbs include alfalfa, blessed thistle, milk thistle, nettle, goat's rue, red clover and Shatavari.

Avoid hormonal methods of birth control as these can decrease the milk supply. Mothers often have trouble with Depo-Provera injections as well as oral birth control pills. Even the progestin-only mini-pill and hormonal IUDs can cause supply problems for some mothers.  Over-the-counter medications for colds and allergies, especially those containing pseudoephedrine, (Sudafed, Actifed, Drixoral and many others), can cause supply problems.

Sheil, I hope that this helps you out.  Please write again if you have more questions.

Anda Tanya - Iffa Jawab : Bila sepatutnya ambil lecithin, Sebelum atau Selepas Makan?

Salam semua,

"Iffa, betul ke makan lecithin after each meal..dlm internet before meal"

Ibu AddinNasa
Product knowledge:

"Saya baru belajar sesuatu tentang Lecithin. Dulu saya biasa amik Lecithin sebelum makan especially masa sedang menyusu anak....namun setelah saya terbaca satu artikel, pengambilan vitamin sebelum makan boleh meningkatkan enzim metabolik yang mana kesannya boleh menjadikan seseorang kuat makan dan sentiasa berselera. Saya notice saya melaluinya. Saya tukar semula jadual pemakanan Lecithin saya, saya amik 6 biji selepas lunch and dinner, baru lah saya tak mudah lapar dan berat saya menampakkan penurunan."
Bawah ni Iffa share info on

When is the best time to take vitamin supplements?

According to Karen Sullivan, author of Vitamins & Minerals, An Illustrated Guide, it's best to take most supplements after a meal. Absorption of supplements is best when the body has bulky food to work on. It is especially important to take time-release formulas with food.

Water-soluble vitamins, especially B-complex and C, are excreted rapidly from the body. So breaking your dose into three parts to take after meals will give you the best chance of maintaining a high body level.

If you have to take all your supplements at once, it is best to take them after your biggest meal of the day. It is also important to take vitamins and minerals together as minerals are essential for the proper absorption of vitamins.

Remember to check your label. It should advise you as to specific instructions on best times to take. Also remember that your health care professional may advise you to vary these guidelines in order to obtain a particular result.

Why lecithin is good for you
Lecithin is a fatty substance which is found in high concentrations in the cell membrane (phospholipid). Every living cell of the body requires lecithin because of its requirement in creating cell membranes. Lecithin is both water and oil soluble and regulates the movement of fats and nutrients entering and leaving the cell.
Lecithin is required for a whole range of body functions, including infant and foetal development and as an aid in reproduction, is essential in keeping the liver and gall bladder healthy and for heart health.
The body uses lecithin both for the proper formation of bile (the body's main emulsifying compound), and as an emulsifying agent itself. Lecithin helps the body use and absorb fat-soluble nutrients, such as vitamin A,vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K.
Lecithin is an important precursor to the main neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, which plays an important role in memory and muscles control. Myelin sheaths that protect the brain, spine and thousands of nerves in the body are almost two-thirds lecithin.
Soy lecithin, a constituent included in most processed and packaged foods is included as a natural emulsifier or stabiliser, is extracted during the processing of soybean oil. It promotes solidity in margarine and gives a consistent texture to salad dressing and other creamy products.
The body produces its own lecithin in the liver.
Important lecithin facts
  • The brain consists of 30% lecithin
  • Lecithin is an excellent source of the vitamin B cofactor, choline(choline is part of the lecithin molecule)
  • Around 20% of the lecithin found in plants and natural foods consists of phosphatidylcholine
  • Choline is so vital in infant development that all baby formula must contain this nutrient
  • Lecithin is a phospholipid, which is part of cell membranes
  • Lecithin granules contain higher concentrations of phosphatidylcholine
  • Lecithin is a good source of linolenic acid

Types of lecithin supplementation
Lecithin is available in the following forms:
  • Capsules - lecithin powder is added to capsules
  • Tablet - lecithin is compressed and formed into tablets
  • Powder - extracted from soybeans and crushed into a powder
  • Granules - soybeans that have been granularised
  • Soft gel Capsules - filled with soybean lecithin liquid(Shaklee Lecithin dlm kategori ini)
  • Liquid - soy lecithin is extracted into a liquid oil

Lecithin supplementation checklist
  • Lecithin should be taken with meals to increase absorption
  • Granular lecithin has a nutty/grainy flavour and can be added to cereals, juice or smoothies
  • Choose non-genetically modified lecithin supplements (the long term effects of genetic modification are not yet known and erring on the side of caution is advisable)
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight - storage in the refrigerator is preferred
Lecithin and health
  • Gall bladder disease - lecithin is a key component of bile, which is a fat digester produced in the gall bladder. Low lecithin levels have been known to cause gallstones when bile levels are low. Taking extra lecithin in this situation has been shown in studies to prevent gallstones
  • Liver disease - a 10 year study on animals showed that lecithin prevented cirrhosis and severe liver scarring caused by alcoholism. Other similar studies have shown it helps the liver affected with hepatitis.
  • Alzheimer's disease - the nerve-building and protection properties of lecithin may be useful for helping with memory problems in people with Alzheimer's disease. More studies are needed in this area to provide proof for this
  • People taking niacin/nicotinamide - people taking these supplements for treatment of high blood cholesterol ortriglycerides levels may need lecithin or choline supplementation to re-balance these levels

Overdosage, toxicity and cautions for lecithin
In generally healthy adults, there are no health concerns or contraindications at normal dosage.
In high doses choline may cause the following side-effects:
  • nausea
  • sweating
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • bloating

CAUTIONS
  • People with bipolar disorder and depression - should not use lecithin as it can worse the depressive stage of the illness
  • People with any psychiatric condition - should get medical advice before taking lecithin

Anda Tanya - Iffa Jawab: Supplement Untuk Kurus Semasa Dalam Pantang!

Jom tengok apa soalannya?
Tanya Puan Liza:
"kalo masa pantang ader produk tok kuruskan badan tak?yg tahu mkn set c jer.help me!"

cover Pa&Ma Feb 2011
Ini gambarnya..
Muadz berusia 1 hari
tembamkan? hubby siap kata pipi sama tinggi dengan hidung. Tapi sekarang…
Muadz 9 bulan
Apa rahsianya? Selain menyusukan dengan susu ibu sepenuhnya, saya percaya Shaklee turut membantu. Ingat entry saya yang ini?
Jujurnya, sebelum mengandung berat saya 55kg. Check-up saya yang terakhir iaitu sebulan sebelum bersalin, berat saya 75kg. hohoho. Banyak betul saya naik kan. Masa nak bersalin tu agaknya berat saya naik lagi. Selepas melahirkan berat saya cuma kurang 10kg.
Cuba teka berat saya berapa sekarang?

(luka cepat baik, susu insyaAllah meriah!) Mari Iffa listkan untuk mengelakkan kekeliruan:
Trial Pack Set B: RM 80 Sahaja (Free Delivery+Special Gift)
  1. Vita-Lea - 30 tabs
  2. Vita-C -30 tabs
  3. B-complex - 30 tabs
  4. Alfalfa - 60 tabs
Trial Pack Set C: RM 100 ( Add On Alfalfa pada harga RM 10 untuk 80 tabs) Juga Free Delivery dan ada Special give!
  1. Vita-Lea - 40 tabs
  2. Vita- C - 40 tabs
  3. B-Complex - 40 tabs
  4. Zinc - 40 tabs

Meh Iffa share picture Iffa rite after naik kerja lepas confinement(Iffa ambil steroid masa confinement) maka takdelah berat yg turun, naek adalah... (T________T)

Pandangan dari depan (tembam)
Inilah ummi Faheem yang cun melecun!Raya 2010
